Orthoceras - 25 pc lot
From Morocco, believed to be from the Devonian age. These pieces show the fossilized orthocone shell within a dark gray to black limestone matrix. They have been shaped out of the limestone and polished over a slight dome on the top, with a mostly flat base.Â
25 pc wholesale lot, available in two general size ranges.
25pc lot for $25.00: Approximately 2" long pieces
25pc lot for $37.50: Approximately 2.5" long pieces
These extinct nautiloid cephalopods had a straight conical shell called an orthocone. The shells are preserved in marine rock, most often limestone. Though these fossils are almost always simply called Orthoceras, slightly different species are found all over the world. They may be more accurately described as "Orthoceratidae" to include other genus, as paleontologists use the name orthoceras specifically to indicate the type species from Middle Ordovician Sweden and Baltic States regions.Â
